More from my few days in Old Manila. This adventure ended with the mother of all missed connections. I arrived in Guam two hours late only to find the once a day connection to Honolulu had left. United found room on a flight to Tokyo connecting to a direct flight to Houston. I wasn’t expecting to go to Japan that day, and arrived home only 6 hours late.

These photos were taken in Old Manila, the Capital of the Philippine Islands. I was told this area was not safe, especially at night. Ordinary folk here buy their food at outdoor stands; the indoor supermarkets are too expensive.

Puerto Galera
Four Girls on The Beach
At Sabang in the Puerto Galera area I stayed and went diving at La Laguna Beach Resort. It had a nice pool, a good restaurant on premises and lots of other places to eat nearby. Prices for food and beer were low. The rooms were of modern motel style. The PADI dive shop is run in the highly organized dive school style. That means no advanced card, no deep dives. Most of what there to see was in the shallow water with some of the best dives being in the 10 to 14 meter range. I remember doing one deep dive ending at an anchor with wild currents. The dive center has technical diving instructors and closed circuit Inspiration rebreathers available, If you like that sort of thing.

Anilo, Batangas
Rocky Shore
These photos were captured in the Philippine Islands. Most international flights arrive late in Manila. It might have been 1:00 AM when I cleared customs followed by 45 minutes of looking for the driver. Despite the unholy hour, the airport was crowded. In the wee hours it was roughly a three hour drive Arthur’s Place, a secluded scuba diving resort in Anilo, Batangas. The hotel is old style Asian. Windows had shutters, but no glass. It’s built on a hillside near the beach and is lovely. Scuba diving in the area was exceptional with beautiful soft corals abundant. Arthur’s seems to be mostly a weekend place used by folks living in the Philippines. One night mid week we were the only guests there. I took my meals at the hotel because of a lack of proximity to other restaurants. The food was good, but it did get repetitive after a while.
