Milford Sound, New Zealand
Seven images in this post.
This famous landscape is normally wet with hundreds of inches of rain each year. These were shot from a moving boat.

The Big Island of Hawaii
I was on the Big Island of Hawaii in February. A month after I left the earth tremors started and subsequently the volcano erupted. Ironically, there was so little going on with the volcano during my visit that I did not bother to go see it.
Maui 2017 Part 2
Maui is known for its endless beaches and the volcano Haleakala. The shot above is a stitched panorama of the crater taken from a location only accessible on the way down the mountain.
Maui 2017 Part 1
Maui is known for its endless beaches and the volcano Haleakala. This trip I didn’t bother with the twisty road to Hana. The shot above is a stitched panorama of the crater.
Breckenridge and Vail
I was recently in Colorado. Aspen groves had turned to gold and the first snow fell at high altitudes.

Leaving Ushuaia

The first 5 photos are from the Tierra del Fuego Mational Park, the last three are from the ships departure from Ushuaia.
Beagle Channel Birds and Sea Lions

After docking at Ushuia I boarded a catamaran to view the wildlife inhabiting small islands in the area.
Beagle Channel

The ship left Punta Arenas going back out the Magellan Channel to the Pacific, South and then turning East into the Beagle Channel on the way to Ushuaia. The ship passed by glaciers along the way right as the sun was rising. Limited lighting and a moving ship made for difficult photography.

Overnight the ship traveled up the Magellan channel and set anchor at Punta Arenas, Chile. That day’s excursion started with a 20 minute bus ride and a transfer to an extremely slow boat taking another 2 hours to reach Magadalena Island, home to about 500,000 Penguins. I was able to spend about 80 minutes there taking pictures before the even slower trip back to the ship. Another group booked a fast boat, it cost considerably less, but it broke down on the way out. The evening’s departure for Ushuaia presented itself with dramatic scenery.
Another Day in Heaven

It takes over 2 days to sail from Puerto Montt to the Magellan Channel. Most of this time the ship is in an inside passage with mountains on either side. These images are from the second day. I was extremely lucky with the weather. The ship’s naturalist said he had never seen it so good in 5 years.
Sunrise on the Inside Passage

Chile’s West coast is lined with islands towering over the channel between them. I awoke at sunrise and took the first few photos from my stateroom. At higher elevations there were glaciers.

Birding on Brays Bayou
8 Photos in This Gallery
Nikon recently started shipping a 200-500mm f/5.6 telephoto zoom lens. The big news is it sells for only $1396 and has better image quality at the long end than their 80-400 zoom. These were taken at nearby Brays Bayou. This same drainage ditch overflowed in May of 2015 flooding thousands of homes, including mine. It took 6 months to put my house back together.

From sea level to 10,000 feet (3,000 M) it takes about an hour of driving to get to this magnificent view at the highest point on Maui.

Lake Chelan and the North Cascades
6 Photos in This Gallery.
I took 8 AM ferry from San Juan Island to Anacortes and proceeded East on Highway 20 through the North Cascades. The day would end at an overpriced motel in Chelan. Most tourists in the area were from Washington State.
The main attraction in Lake Chelan is a boat that crosses the lake each day. It passes first by lakeside homes, then through a long completely undeveloped area finally arriving at Stehkin, a settlement accessible only by boat or air. Along the way there were sightings of mountain goats, deer and forest fires. The night was spent in Leavenworth, a town decorated to look like a Bavarian village.

San Juan Island

San Juan Island is known for its mild summers. Unfortunately the temperatures were in the upper 80’s (30C) for the first two evenings and my hotel room was not air conditioned. There is a lovely sculpture garden near Roche Harbor. It is actually an art gallery as all pieces are for sale and unsold works are rotated out after two years.
